Catalogue data: ship hydromechanics orientated project, fully integrated with the courses people1 and draw. Using the knowledge gained in the courses Fluid Mechanics, Strength and Stiffness and Hydromechanics 1.

Courseyear: 1

Semester: 2 (period 3)

Hours p/w: 24

Other hours: 16

Assessment: project

Assessm.period(s):

(see academic calendar)

Prerequisites: Content of semester 1 and semester 2.

Follow up: Semester 4

Detailed description of topics:

1.       People skills are discussed and practised in one group task split out over 7 weeks

2.       Introduction to drawing is explained and practised in individual sub-tasks split out over 6 weeks

3.       Dedicated naval architectural drawing is explained and practised in individual sub-tasks

4.       Each group will be given specifications for a body plan and demands from a ship owner for a Heavy Lift Ship.

5.       Each group member draws his own lines plan and calculates various hydrostatic quantities.

6.       Within each group the best lines plan, according to a given set of criteria, will be chosen.

7.       The strength of given parts will be calculated using input from fluid mechanics and/or strength of materials.

8.       The stability of the Heavy Lift Ship for various load scenarios will be calculated using hydromechanics.

9.       An end of project presentation will be given by each group in POWERPOINT.
