Prerequisites: mk1A, wb1109, mt500

Detailed description of topics:

This exercise is subdivided into following 6 parts:

  • P1: Mentor system: A university lecturer will be assigned to a group of 10 students with as goal to improve the change over from secondary school to the university. It comprises a training for planning your work, making students known with the procedures at the faculty, and to give guidance during the projects by having regular short meetings.
  • P2: Tensile test: to be performed during one afternoon in quintal 1. Goal: Doing an experiment, observation of material behaviour, determine characteristic material constants, illustration for mk1A
  • P3: Fabrication processes: In quintal 2 the students will learn the basic fabrication processes and groups of 2 students apply them during the fabrication of a steel cantilever beam. The most importand process parameters are explained for the individual processes as drilling, milling, sawing, flame cutting, welding, cutting, and also how to work safely with the machine tools. All these processes are used to fabricate the cantilever beam which will be tested during quintal 5 (mtop01 d5 p6), and in the mean time a strength calculation will be made as one of the exrcises of mt032p4.
  • P4: Description of Project: In quintal 3 a maritime object has to be designed and fabricated by groups of 5 students. The object has to fulfill rather strict design requirements which can be evaluated with the subjects for tuition of mt500 and wb1103. The design has to be made in 36 hours, and the mentor will plan regular meetings to check the progress. The group itself has to organise the required activities. The object has to be fabricated in 16 hours. To observe whether the object meets the design requirements it will be tested and these results have to be evaluated by the group.
  • P5: Resistance test performed by groups of 5 students during an afternoon in quintal 5. Goal: put the theory of mt500 to a practical test, and get better feeling of the components of ship resistance. The required calculations will be made in weeks 5 and 6 of quintal 2 as an exercise of mt032p2.
  • P6: Testing and evaluation of the results for the cantilever beam which has been fabricated during p3, and for which the strength has been calculated as an exercise of mt032p4. In quintal 5 a sufficient number of afternoon-sessions will be organised during which 12 groups can test and evaluate their cantilever beam. The measured results have to be compared with the calculated failure loads, and the failure modes of the different sections will be discussed.

Remarks (specific information about assesment, entry requirements, etc.):

Examination: the part exercises are considered sufficient when the following criteria are met:

  • Attendance is compulsory during all sessions as indicated in the agenda for exercises. The credits for a component, p1 .. p6, will not be given in case of an absence during one of the relevant sessions.
  • Report, drawings and/or end product ready
  • Evaluation and/or report of measurements submitted
  • Conform to further requirements as specified in the relevant manual
  • The project mtop01 d5 is finished only in case all part exercises have been considered sufficient.

Admission:

  • Part p4 can only be done in case part p3 has been considered sufficient,
  • Part p6 can only be done in case part p3 has been considered sufficient, and mt032p4, weeks 2 & 3, have been finished.
  • The relative weights of the parts p1 .. p6 are: 0.1 - 0.1 - 0.5 - 2.1 - 0.1 - 0.1
Goals:
  • Creating more awareness of the coherence between the individual courses
  • Introduction to the basic fabrication processes
  • Aqcuire the routines for design and production processes
  • Learning to work in a group
Computer use:
Usage of computers for parts p4 .. p6 is adviced
