The sub faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Marine Technology offers for selected candidates a 2-year MSc degree course in Transportation Engineering.
Transportation Engineering comprises the design, construction and operation of systems and equipment for controlled handling and transportation of freight, bulk materials, soils and people.
This includes the systems and equipment for the creation of the infrastructure.
The following characterization of Transportation Engineering can be given: Transportation Engineering is the process of planning, implementing and controlling the efficient, cost-effective flow and storage of raw materials, in-process inventory, finished goods and related information from point of origin to point of consumption for the purpose of confirming to customers requirements. This comprises both a physical and a managerial component. The physical component relates to the physical-logistic aspects of goods, supply and demand processes, separate means of transport and those integrated in a logistic configuration. The managerial component relates to policy, coordination and control of goods flows and logistic machinery.
Transportation Engineering consists of designing infrastructure, the construction of infrastructure and the use of infrastructure. All three aspects are part of the MSc course. Because of the multi-disciplinary character of Transportation Engineering, the course consists of Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Marine Technology, Electrical Engineering and Mathematics/Informatics. This is reflected in the course curriculum. The graduation project can be focused on the design of a Logistics system, the design of Transportation equipment, the design of Dredging and Tunnel Drilling equipment and the design of Road and Railway vehicles. Graduation projects will also include organizational and economical aspects.
After completing his/her MSc study in Transportation Engineering, the engineer possesses insight, knowledge and skills in the multi-disciplinary designing of systems or equipment for creating and using Transportation systems, equipment and infrastructure on the basis of the demands. He/she is adept at carrying out the necessary calculations, is able to take an overall view of the consequences of technical and economical compromises and has an understanding of the aspects affecting the cost price.
