Detailed description of topics: Pressures and temperatures of steam in a Clausius-Rankine cycle for raising work are progressing due to the development of stronger creep resistant materials. So the efficiency of raising electricity becomes higher which reduces costs and saves the environment. Heat recovery boilers in connection with advanced gasturbines offer a further efficiency gain at the cost of fuel flexibility. Calculations of the amount of combustion air and flue gases, the heat content and the gas velocity offer the basis for the design. Very accurate calculation of the required surface for heattransfer by radiation and convection is nescessary for modern boilers. Heat release in the furnace and the residence time is defining the production of harmful emissions in the environment. Special attention is given to boiling phenomena, water steam mixture flow and stability, feedwater properties and corrosion. Types of boilers and their control characteristics are discussed. Similarities and differences with nuclear boilers are emphasised. |
