Detailed description of topics:
Definition of Tribology and subdivision of the working field. The load carrying capacity of contacts between moving parts, with minimal friction and wear.
Dynamic contacts: roughness and real contact area, elastic and plastic deformation of micro contacts, index of plasticity, adhesive behaviour, elasticity, friction affected by plough and adhesive components, flits temperature, friction in rolling contacts, mechanism of wear.
Materials: metals, plastics, composites, surface treatment, systematic material selection.
Films: Self acting and pressurised films. Reynolds equation, wedge-effects, buffer-effect and stretch-effects. Non-dimensional presentation of characteristics like load carrying capacity, friction and flow. Design tools-charts. Classical problem with rigid surfaces. Stability. Stationary loaded and dynamically loaded films. Inverse theory. Models for thin foil and seals. Elasto hydrodynamic films. Gas en liquid films with pressure source.
