Detailed description of topics:
  1. The main objective is to acquire basic knowledge and skills required for a successful operation and design of process installations. Attention is given to important process design considerations, like the choice of separation process, analogy between energy and mass transfer, and the influence of flow pattern/regime on mass transfer efficiency (scale-up problems). Emphasis will be on equipment dimensioning for a given capacity and product specification, outgoing from simple models based on first principles, including relevant mechanical design considerations. Plant design context includes a more global overview of process integration, control, safety (work with chemicals) and environmental considerations.
  2. The interaction between equipment and the process will be evaluated by carrying out experimental parametric studies with available pilot plant units for distillation, crystallisation, stripping and membrane separations.
