Department Shipdesign Shipping |
Professor: prof.dr.ir. N. Wijnolst
Description of the graduate program:
The chair in Shipping, Ship-innovation and Maritime Business Studies is part of the section OEMO (Design of ships). The chair gives three lectures:
mt311 Shipping and exploitation of ships
mt312 Design innovation in shipping
mt313 Shipping management
The study equivalent of each lecture is 80 hours.
The chair started in 1973, Since then almost a hundred students have graduated with the chair. Most of them now work in shipping: for shipowners, transport companies, ship financiers, maritime researchers, etc.
The design of ships is considered from the viewpoint of shipping. Without knowledge of shipping, the exploitation of ships, the shipping world, cargo markets, financing, freight markets, etc., one cannot design a good ship. In- novations in ship design are often initiated by the maritime world and are not necessarily technology-driven. The shipping engineer shapes new opportunities, supported by the knowledge from this complex environment.
The graduation project is often carried out in cooperation with a company or institute, usually a shipowner and sometimes abroad. An overview of previous graduation projects is available at the chair and will become available on inter- net.
Students who graduate with the chair must, besides the forementioned lectures, choose a number of subjects from the following specialties: System analysis (from transport), logistics, shipping economics, creative problem solving and information technology.
The graduation project takes about nine months. The first part, of four months, consists of preliminary research. The second part, of five months, consists of the engineering project. If you are interested in he chair, you are advised to attend the graduation presentations.
The chair is staffed by one part-time professor and one assistant-professor.
