Detailed description of topics:

By means of answering questions the midship section of a vessel and its scantlings are determined using classification rules. Various compuer programs may be used, such as:

  • midship section scantlings according Lloyd's Register Rules;

  • various programs for calculation of cross sectional properties such as section modulus and moment of inertia; determination of optimal I-beam dimensions for a required section modulus.

Calculation of stresses in elements of the structure.

Answering some questions about a work drawing.

Summarizing the answers and calculations in a report.

Course material:

  • Lecture notes: mt810P: Manual structural exercise. Available at Sales department WbMT.

  • Lecture notes: mt810P1: Notes on the construction of ships and their elements, parts I and II, Shipbuilding profiles. Available at Sales Department WbMT.

  • Title: Shipbuilding profiles. At small drawing room MT.

Remarks (specific information about assesment, entry requirements, etc.):

  • Admission: The exercise is open to students that have succesfully followed the cours mt800 (Ship structures MT) and have attended mt710P1 (Introduction exercises CAD).

  • Examination: The credits obtained will be based upon the drawing of the midship section and the report. The exercise is considered sufficient when the credits obtained are 6 or higher , the exercise is returned to the student and the student has discussed the result with the university staff responsible.

  • At start of the third dimester an instruction will be given for which registration with mr. Drooger is necessary.

  • The date of the instruction will be published at the billboards. The exercisemust be submitted within six weeks after receipt of the exercise description. If returned tin time and additionally within three years from start of the study, a bonus point will be given in addition to the normal credit points. If not returned in time, a new, somewhat more straining, exercise will be given to the student.
