strain, Hooke’s law, 2d homogeneous state of stress, superposition ·
Normal force. Bar, differential equation based upon
equilibrium and Hooke’s law, statically determined and statically
undetermined structures, first moments of area, normal force center,
centroid, 1d examples with temperature and prestrain effects ·
Bending. Second moment of area of symmetrical cross
sections, relation between curvature and strain, normal stress distribution,
section modulus, optimising of cross sections, differential equation for
bending, combination of bending moment and normal force, moment area method,
forget-me-nots, wagging effect, deformation of statically determined
structures, statically undetermined girders, simple statically undetermined
portals with emphasis on symmetry and skew symmetry ·
Shear force. Separation of bending and shear, distribution
of shear stress for special area’s as rectangular and open thin-walled.
Application to welded and glued connections, design of cross sections ·
Torsion. Polar moment of inertia, angle of twist, shear
stress distribution in circular and thin-walled single cell cross sections,
application to welded and glued connections ·

Remarks (assessment, entry requirements,
etc.): Prior
to the written examination two laboratory exercises have to be completed
successfully. 30%
of the of the mark is determined by three computer tests, 70% by a written
closed book examination |
