The sub faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Marine Technology offers for selected candidates in the academic year 2000/2001 and 2001/2002 a 2-year M.Sc. degree course in Energy Engineering

Description of the Master Program

This curriculum comprises the design, construction and operation of systems and equipment which are needed to provide energy services such as electricity, power and heat, and indoor climate control and refrigeration. Cost, reliability, environmental compatibility and sustainability are aspects which are taken into consideration.

At this moment there is a continuously changing situation with several new players in the energy market, an increasing number of available technological options and a growing importance of sustainability. Therefore, application of advanced tools and techniques to assess the different available technological options with regard to integration of the chosen solutions into wider infrastructures (large scale centralized and small scale decentralized), the possibilities for adaptation to changing economical boundary conditions and the sustainability of the total system, forms an integral part of the curriculum.

The research activities reflect the aspects, depicted above and aim at increasing the sustainability and flexibility of the overall systems. An important common subject is the increased application of sustainable energy sources.

The research carried out by the section Thermal Power Engineering is mainly in the field of fuel conversion (combustion, gasification, gas conditioning, gas turbines and fuel cells) and analysis of the thermodynamic and dynamic characteristics of energy systems. Small scale decentralized systems, based on sustainable energy sources, form also an area of research. These projects are mostly carried out in cooperation with international partners within and outside Europe.

The research carried out by the section Refrigeration and Indoor Climate Control is mainly aimed at decreasing the energy use for air-conditioning and refrigeration systems and an increased use of sustainable, environmentally friendly energy sources (energy saving in utility buildings and private housing, application of environmentally harmless refrigerants, improved sorption systems for refrigeration and heat pumping).

The graduation project will be part of the ongoing research projects carried out within the sections involved.
