Detailed description of topics:

  • Introduction indoor climate: objectives, heating, ventilating, air conditioning (HVAC).

  • Characteristics of humidity. The Mollier diagram giving the relations between absolute humidity, relative humidity and enthalpy, is discussed.

  • Thermal comfort. Various definitions of comfort are given. The comfort model of Fanger and its use as a design tool are demonstrated.

  • Outdoor climate as disturbing factor; physical and statistical properties of solar radiation. Temperature, humidity and wind.

  • Heating and cooling loads in buildings. The thermal response of the building in outdoor climate, internal heat sources. Calculation of capacities of HVAC-installations.

  • HVAC systems and their applications. When, what to apply.

  • Design of transport of air and water (Ducts and piping).

  • Air flow patterns in air conditioned confined spaces: calculation methods are discussed and an introduction of the computational fluid dynamic computer codes is given.

Course material:

  • Indoor Climate A (wb4412)

  • Calculation of heating, cooling load and temperature exceedings.

Remarks (specific information about assesment, entry requirements, etc.):

Goals:
To provide student basic knowledge for designing heating, ventilating, and airconditioning installations in buildings.
Fundamentals are treated in depth, there where it is required for understanding the design.

Computer use:
Computer codes for design are demonstrated (VABI). Simulation thermal behaviour office room (modelling: SIMULINK).

Laboratory project(s):
Experiments with air handling installation.

Design content:
A case study: a design for a specific building is discussed.
