Detailed description of topics:
  • Performance maps of gas turbine components.
  • Matching procedures and computer programs for calculating the static and dynamic off-design performance.
  • Effects of ambient conditions on performance.
  • Engine performance constraints.
  • Flow phenomena in compressors: stall, surge, choking.
  • Performance monitoring: trend analysis, the use of parameter estimating techniques in the case of a limited number of non-accurate measurements.

Remarks (specific information about assesment, entry requirements, etc.):
Goals:
This course is designed to provide the students with a knowledge of procedures to determine the design and off-design performance of gas turbine engines and the factors limiting the performance.
Computer use:
Use of own program for off-design performance calculations and the program GASTURB, designed by dr.J.Kurzke and the program GSP by NLR.
Laboratory project(s):
Design content:
Design aspects of compressors with respect the performance of the gas turbine system.
Percentage of design: 25%
