Remarks assessment, entry requirements, etc.):

During the course, each week a test assignment will be given. In case the assignments are made with good results, the mark for these assignments will be taken into account with the examination mark.

Learning goals:

The student must be able to:

  • L1 Explain and apply prime mover (diesel engine, gas turbine) characteristics (drive characteristic (power/torque-speed relation), operational envelope, indicator diagram, bmep, torque-bmep, (indicated and effective) efficiency, specific fuel consumption, specific air consumption)
  • L2 Explain prime mover (diesel engine, gas turbine) construction types (2- and 4- stroke, trunk piston, cross head construction for diesel engines; gasgenerator, free power turbine concept, simple cycle, intercooled regenerative cycle for gasturbines)
  • L3 Calculate power, torque from brake mean effective pressure and engine dimensions for diesel engines
  • L4 Apply  basic thermodynamics to prime movers (diesel engine, gas turbine) to derive p,V-and T,S-diagrams, to calculate energy flows, fuel/air consumption and efficiencies)
  • L5 Explain and apply ideal models of diesel engine and gas turbine cycles (Otto, Diesel, Seiliger, Brayton), compare with actual process, understand differences with actual engine

·         L6 Explain and describe principles of  pressure charging (exhaust gas driven turbo charging in particular) and its influence on overall diesel engine characteristics (bmep; power density with regard to weight and dimensions; torque/power – speed relation)

  • L7 Explain and describe transmission systems, their components

·         L8 Make a shafting system strength and vibration analysis

  • L9 Explain reasons for application of controllable pitch propellers, understand construction of cpp
  • L10 Derive propulsor load characteristics (power/torque-speed relation) based on ship resistance characteristics
  • L11 Apply, understand and explain matching of prime mover to propulsor, as well as the influence of operational conditions on ship’s speed, propeller speed and engine loading
  • L12 Describe and explain main and secondary electric power supplies (DC, AC, frequency)
