Detailed description of topics:
This course gives an introduction to Rheology, which is the field that describes the material and flow behaviour of non-Newtonian fluids. Examples of non-Newtonian fluids that are important for the industry are polymer solutions and polymer melts.
Contents of the course:
  • Differences between non-Newtonian and Newtonian flows.
  • Generalised Newtonian models.
  • Material description in shear and elongation: viscosity, nomal stresses, elongational viscosity.
  • Rheometry: cone-plate, capillary, Couette and elongation rheometers.
  • Influence of temperature and pressure.
  • Linear visco-elasticity.
  • Some non-linear visco-elastic models.
