Detailed description of topics:

The thermodynamic principles for rotating machines with stationary flow. First and second law of thermodynamics and irriversiblility in fluids. Isentropic and polytropic efficiency. The principles and construction of the steam turbine with and without governing stage. The principles and construction of the compressor and the pump, both axial and radial.

Remarks (specific information about assesment, entry requirements, etc.):

Assesment is individual. For appointment please contact mr. Th. Woudstra

Goals:

To know how to work with and how to interpret speed triangles for stages of turbines, compressors and pumps. To calculate the absorbed or delivered power. To be able to represent schematically the construction for the different machines of rotating machinery. Estimation for influence of irreversibility (qualitative and quantitative)

Computer use:

Not required. A pocket calculator is sufficient.

Laboratory project(s):

Design content:

The power range, the way of control and required efficiency influence the design.

Percentage of design: 50%
