Detailed description of topics:

·           Concepts. Tension, compression, shear, stress, strain, Hooke’s law, 2d homogeneous state of stress, superposition

·           Normal force. Bar, differential equation based upon equilibrium and Hooke’s law, statically determined and statically undetermined structures, first moments of area, normal force center, centroid, 1d examples with temperature and prestrain effects

·           Bending. Second moment of area of symmetrical cross sections, relation between curvature and strain, normal stress distribution, section modulus, optimising of cross sections, differential equation for bending, combination of bending moment and normal force, moment area method, forget-me-nots, wagging effect, deformation of statically determined structures, statically undetermined girders, simple statically undetermined portals with emphasis on symmetry and skew symmetry

·           Shear force. Separation of bending and shear, distribution of shear stress for special area’s as rectangular and open thin-walled. Application to welded and glued connections, design of cross sections

·           Torsion. Polar moment of inertia, angle of twist, shear stress distribution in circular and thin-walled single cell cross sections, application to welded and glued connections

·           Special subjects. Shear center of cross sections with one axis of symmetry

Remarks (assessment, entry requirements, etc.):

Prior to the written examination two laboratory exercises have to be completed successfully.

30% of the of the mark is determined by three computer tests, 70% by a written closed book examination

Learning goals: The student …..

·           understands the meaning of tension, compression and shear, linear elasticity and elasticity constants

·           is able to calculate the internal forces and the displacements of simple statically determined and statically undetermined bar structures, including the effect of temperature change and prestrain

·           is able to calculate the stresses on any plane in a point of a body in a homogeneous state of stress

·          is able to calculate the normal and shear stress distribution in the cross section of a beam due to a normal force, a shear force and a bending moment

·          is able to calculate the shear stress distribution due to torsion in a circular and a thin-walled single cell cross section

·          is able to calculate the reaction forces, the displacements and rotations of statically determined and statically undetermined girders and simple portals

·           is able to utilise symmetry and skew symmetry of a structure

·          understands the significance of the concept of shear centre, is able to calculate its position of cross sections with an axis of symmetry
