Detailed description of topics:

The concept of this project is to integrate as many as possible of the subjects dealt with in the first year’s curriculum.

The sub-tasks of this project are:

1.         Familiarization with CAD software package xEagle and exercises applied to the crane construction to be designed,

2.         Design, engineering, manufacturing and testing of a crane construction at model scale for lifting of heavy loads.

3.         Exercises as regards production and structural design & strength aspects,

4.         Presentation of project results.

Course material: Manual mtp104 “Lifting of Heavy Loads”

References from literature: none

Remarks (assesment, entry requirements, etc.): Presentation and discussion at end of project.

Learning goals: To be able to:

·            apply the 3D CAD drawing software xEagle for making simple drawings,

·            synthesize previously gained knowledge to design a crane construction at model scale for Lifting of Heavy Loads,

·            apply previously gained knowledge and skills to construct the crane out of steel plate,

·            verify by testing in a water basin if the performance of the model-crane meets the requirements as specified and tallies with the predicted behaviour,

·            apply the rule requirements of a classification society as regards the structural configuration for a double bottom tank,

·            apply the rule requirements of a classification society as regards the “local scantlings” for the members in a double bottom tank with variable spacing of the longitudinal stiffeners,

·            evaluate the production parameters for the chosen variants of the double bottom construction,

·            make a motivated choice for the best variant of the double bottom construction,

·            apply previously gained knowledge and skills of presentations to present the results and conclusions of the project and to answer relevant questions.

Computer use: yes

Laboratory project(s): project

Design content:

Structural design of an object starting with a description of its task and additional specifications, consider alternative solutions and make a motivated choice between the alternatives based upon design calculations and production plus exploitation aspects

Percentage of design:  80 %
