Detailed description of topics:
Application of continuum mechanics of homogeneous anisotropic materials in case of composite materials like fibre reinforced plastics. Hygrothermal effects. Relation between stiffness and strength of components and composite. Failure criteria. Laminate theory. First Ply Failure. Interlaminar edge stresses, influence on stacking sequence. Viscoelasticity and fatigue of laminates.

Goals:
Survey of and insight into mechanics of anisotropic composite materials, stiffness and strength macroscopically and microscopically, in particular on fibre reinforced plastic laminates. Introduction into special literature.

Computer use:
Application of some pc programmes in practice, particularly concerning laminates.

Laboratory project(s):
4 half days of computational exercises and laboratory projects.

Design content:
Obtaining insight into anisotropic behaviour of composite materials for the benefit of designing.
