Detailed description of topics:

Biomechatronics is a contraction of biomechanics and mechatronics. In this course the function and coordination of the human motion apparatus is the central focus, and the design of assistive devices for the support of the function of the motion apparatus. Examples are assistive devices like an orthosis, prosthesis or Functional Electrical Stimulation of muscles. The goal is to provide some function to patients with functional deficiencies.

Remarks assessment, entry requirements, etc.:

Examination will be oral. In case of a large enrollment, a written examination will be given. Students are requested to make one final assignment, which will be part of the oral examination.

Learning goals:

The goal of the course is to give students insight in the functioning of the human motion apparatus, and the way that the dynamics of the motion apparatus is affected by assistive devices. A thorough analysis of these applications can result in optimization of the assistive devices in energetical or control aspects.
