General introduction into mechanical engineering and marine technology and into the key variables and key considerations in mechanical system design. Introduction in drawing. Detailed description of topics:
  • System engineering: system types, internal and external forces/moments, system sections.
  • Modelling: functional operation of simple machinery, block diagrams, energy relations, interaction.
  • Equilibrium: forces, force components, force composition, equilibrium of (interconnected) systems.
  • Mechanical amplifiers: principal possibilities for the amplifications of force, travel, moment and angle.
  • Friction: dry friction.
  • Stability: definitions, stability of vessels, stabilising systems, indifferent systems, Scribanti's Law.
  • Geometry and numerical integration: description of vessel forms, integration rule of Simpson.
  • Scaling laws: static and dynamic scaling laws, distinctive numbers, branching, difficulties in scaling tests.
  • Resistance: fluid and gas flow resistance, environmental influences, optimisation of form, tube flow resistance, continuity equation, Bernouilli's Law.
  • Propulsion: working principle of wings, geometry and working principle of propellers, propeller characteristics, sailing.

Remarks (specific information about assesment, entry requirements, etc.):
The first six classes on the subjects system engineering, modelling, equilibrium, and mechanical amplifiers are simultaneously presented to the mechanical engineering students. The other subjects are presented to the marine technology students in a separate class. The written course material can be used at the examinations.
