Detailed description of topics:

The different sectors of the maritime industry are being discussed, characteristics, terms and activities are explained with background and purpose. After an introduction to the functional requirements (for capital aspects), the roles, players and aspects of maritime operations are discussed. Examples ranked out for the shipping and shipbuilding industry. Types of operations, legal aspects, organization and cost of operations are treated. A brief discussion on terminals is being followed by an introduction to technical requirements.

Learning goals:

  • Understand and explain the role of marine exploitation and its economic importance
  • Apply basic economic principles to the mix of trade, commodities and ship types to arrive at a judgement of its potential
  • Generate and interpret ship newbuilding specifications
  • Estimate and interpret rudimentary financial performance of a specific trade/ship/commodity
  • Interpret the legal constraints relative to shipping, contracting and offshore operations
  • Understand and interpret market information relative to shipping
  • Generate and interpret owners requirements as basis for ship design activities and ship newbuilding specifications
  • Understand and explain the historical development of most common ship types
  • Understand main functions of ships: transport of bulk cargo, unit cargo, special cargo (liquefied or pressurized gas, refrigerated commodities), fishing, dredging, offshore operations
  • Understand market influences on ship design
