Detailed description of topics:

Ship repair is an uncertain business with strong fluctuations in contracted work. Competition put pressure on the rates and environmental requirements raise the cost. Saving of manhours by introduction of innovative systems and careful jobpreparation and -control are topic is the business.A high level of craftmanship and flexibility of the organisation are required.

Salvage is even more uncertain and requires an organisation which can bring together the required material and expertise in a very short time. Sometimes unconventional technical solutions have to be applied.

Due to the required preparation time for cases by the staff, application will close 2 weeks before the start of the course. After that date no more applications will be accepted!

References from literature:

  • To be selected depending on the subject

The format of the course is always a case study of an actual issue in ship repaair or salvage to be carried out individually or in a small group (2-3), supported by the company involved.A study of relevant literature forms part of the course. Further necessary information has to be collected from companies involved in ship repair or salvage.Lectures are meant for discussion of the case and the progress of the work. A written report and oral presentation will conclude the course. The assignments are of multi-dicipline type and well suited for a combination of literature study and field work at a company.

  3. analyse a specific practical problem either on marine salvage or ship repair (technique, organization, planning and logistics)

  4. generate possible solutions for the problem defined in learning objective number 3

  5. evaluate the possible solutions and to give an underpinned recommendation for the final solution

  6. work in small groups with minimal educational support
