Detailed description of topics: Ship motions Waves: linear theory of waves, sea waves, wave spectra. Definitions of
motions: System of co-ordinate axes and motion components, harmonic motions.
Eulerian equations of motions, mass and mass moment of inertia. Motions in
still water: Uncoupled motions, equations of motion, hydrodynamic mass, damping,
restoring forces, natural frequencies. Coupled motions: Heave-pitch-surge
coupling, sway-yaw-roll coupling. Experiments: Motion decay tests in still
water, forced oscillation tests in still water. Motions in regular waves:
Heaving spar and rolling ship, hydromechanic forces, equations of motion,
frequency response characteristics, experiments and computations. Coupled
heave and pitch motions: 2-dimensional hydromechanic forces, influence of
forward motion, equations of motion, frequency response, absolute and
relative vertical motions, shear forces and bending moments, comparisons
between results of experiments and computations. Steering and Maneuvering Definitions and terminology. Standard full-scale maneuvering tests:
Turning circle test, spiral test, zig-zag maneuver, reversed spiral test,
pull-out test, presentation of results. Linearized equations of motion:
Linearized Eulerian equations of motion, evaluation of stability , Nomoto’s
equations. Model tests: types of experiments, analysis of results, examples.
Steering: Equations of motion, blokdiagram of a steered ship, optimization of
steering behaviour in waves. Rudders: rudder profiles, rudder forces and
moments. |
