Remarks assessment, entry requirements, etc.):

The format of the course is always a case study of an actual problem in inland shipping to be carried out individually or in a small group (2-3), supported by the company involved.

A study of relevant literature forms part of the course. Further necessary information has to be collected from companies involved in inland shipping.

Lectures are meant for discussion of the case and the progress of the work. A written report and oral presentation will conclude the course.

The assignments are of multi-dicipline type and well suited for a combination of literature study and field work at a company.

Learning goals:

The student must be able to:

  1. interpret the differences between inland shipping and sea going trade

  2. analyse the position of inland shipping in the logistic chain, especially in Europe

  3. analyse the possibilities and restrictions of inland shipping in relation to rail and road transport, the various fairway particulars and legislative matters

  4. analyse a specific practical problem on inland shipping (marketing, logistics, operational, semi-technical)

  5. generate possible solutions for the problem defined in learning objective number 4

  6. evaluate the possible solutions and to give an underpinned recommendation for the final solution

  7. work in small groups with minimal educational support
