Detailed description of topics:

introduction to Dutch law, basic juridical concepts, international and European law, constitutional law, incl. legislation, (procedural) administrative law, obligatory contract (especially shipbuilding and transport), tort (i.a. collision), civil procedural law, right of ownership and residual real rights, environmental law at sea and at the shipyard, introduction to company- and labour law.

Learning goals:

The student must be able to:

  1. show elementary knowledge and understanding of some international and national law and some juridical skills, relevant in the context of maritime technology

  2. understand the main system of international and national law and is able to apply basic juridical concepts as for instance civil and public law, coercive and permissive law, juridical act and legal person

  3. show elementary knowledge of and to give an explanation about subjects of constitutional and administrative law (e.g. concerning the organisation of state and government, legislation, administrative decisions, principles of proper administration and administrative law procedures)

  4. apply elementary knowledge about the making, the fulfilment and the consequences of a contract and the use of general conditions as well as about torts, especially as for liability-aspects and can argue for which occurrences insurance is recommendable

  5. describe the most elementary concepts and operation of environmental, company and labour law

  6. find and interpret clauses in relevant international documents (e.g. treaties, documents of the European Union) and Dutch statutes (e.g. the Civil Code, General Administrative Law Act)

  7. read and analyse a juridical text like an article in a periodical, a bill or a ruling
