Detailed description of topics:

The course consist of 3 lectures of 2 hours and 3 pract. of 2 hours, in which the next subjects are discussed:

  • Lecture 1: Computersystems, peripherals, operatingsystem DOS. Directory structures. DOS commands: CD, MKDIR, DEL, REN, COPY. Memory, UMA, XMS, EMS.Windows. Filemanager, installation of (Window)programs.

  • Lecture 2: Operatingsysem UNIX, UNIX-commands: ls, mv, cp, vi. Compression: ZIP, ARJ, GZIP, Compress. Networks. Ethernet, SLIP, PPP. Use of Internet.

  • Lecture 3: Networks, DuNet, WbNet. Use of Internet: WWW (Netscape), NeWs, E-mail, Gopher. Consultation of libraries, News, FAQ 's, WWW-sides for information about books and recent research. Integration of information in publications. HTML-language.

During the course there wil be some demo's.

It is expected that the lecturenotes are studied before the lectures.

Goals:

  • To obtain understanding of the possibilities of computersystems and networks during the studies.

  • Instructions about the use of the PSTN-gateway, E-mail and Internet facilities of the University.

  • Using the informationssystems on the Internet (Gopherservers, WWW, NeWS, E-mail)

  • Instructions how to search of books, recent research, articles, programs and personal information.

Computer use:

Hands on for all students including: installation of programs under Windows, use of MS-Window facilities, use of Internet facilities.

Laboratory project(s):

  • Practical 1: Create a directory structure on a diskette. Create, copy, rename and delete files. Create program groups under Windows, install Window programs.

  • Practical 2: Use of the Filemanager, associate, execute, rename, move and copy files. Change of communication port parameters. Use ftp en telnet. Create, move, rename files under UNIX. Compress en decompress files.

  • Practical 3: Use WWW-browsers, NeWS, E-mail. Search information about: books, NeWS, recent research and software.
