Learning goals:

The student must be able to:

  1. apply the polar decomposition to compute stretch and rotation tensors for a solid material and stretching and spin tensors for a fluid

  2. explain the geometrical interpretation of these quantities in the description of large deformations and their relation to the theory of infinitesimal deformations

  3. explain and compute material and spatial time rates and to apply Reynolds’ transport theorem for global quantities

  4. compute and explain the distinction between Lagrangian and Eulerian stress measures (Cauchy and first Piola-Kirchhoff stresses)

  5. express the balance principles (mass, linear and angular momentum) in Lagrangian and Eulerian forms (global and local)

  6. formulate constitutive models for solids and fluids according to the principle of objectivity

  7. formulate initial-boundary value problems appropriate for solids and fluids and to solve selected problems analytically
