Components and resultants of forces in R2 and R3. Equilibrium in R2 and R3. Statically determinate vs statically indeterminate structures. Plane trusses and frames. Centroids and moments of inertia of plane areas. Normal force, shear force and bending moments in beams.

Goals:
The basic goal is to develop students' skills in equilibrium analysis and force transmission in elementary structural/mechanical systems with emphasis on vector methods. The proficiency level and experience must be adequate to serve as a background for subsequent courses in dynamics, strength of materials, fluid mechanics and mechanical design.
