Faculty of  Mechanical Engineering and Marine Technology

Lecturer(s): ir. Th.Woudstra

Tel.:  015-27 86999

Catalog data: gas-turbine, heat balance, process flow-sheet, steam-generator, steam-turbine

Course year:

MSc 1st year

Period:

2A (+ 2B)

Hours per week:

Other hours:

168 hours

Assessment:

report and oral discussion

Assessm.period:

by appointment

(see academic calendar)

Prerequisites: wb4302, wb4420, wb4429-03

Follow up:

Detailed description of topics:

The process flow scheme (or sheet) assignment will be done as teamwork with 3 or 4 students. The main task is the design of a power plant, with regard to thermodynamics, economy, environment and off-design-behaviour (especially part load). Besides the prerequisites, support is given by the lectures Thermal Power Plants (wb4422) and several instructions

Course material:

“Manual for the assignment process-scheme”, available on “Blackboard”

References from literature:

Kehlhofer, Schröder, Spencer e.a., Traupel. More extended list available

Remarks assesment, entry requirements, etc.):

The report (of approximately 20 pages + attachments), written by the students, will be discussed in an oral session

Learning goals:

The student must be able to:

  1. solve the heat-balance of a process flow scheme

  2. determine the main parameters (and regions of them) influencing the thermodynamic behaviour of a power plant

Computer use:

The software Cycle-Tempo is available to make the calculations.

Laboratory project(s):

No laboratory-use required

Design content:

system-design, preliminary plant-design

Percentage of design:  100 %
