Remarks (specific information about assesment, entry requirements, etc.):
The course is a follow up of the third years project Industrial Production IP3. It concentrates on methods the improve the performance of existing manufacturing units by the implementation of new technology. The course is obligatory for students specializing in production engineering but may be followed by other students as a choiche course if they have sufficient background knowledge about manufacturing technology.
Students have to work in teams of three on an assignment during approximately 50 hours. The result should be a report of ca. 25 pages and an oral presentation of approximately 30 minutes. Attendance during lecture hours and presentations is obligatory. Registration for this course is required at Mr. G.C. Schrumpf. The final score for this course is determined as follows: 25% oral group presentation; 25% by group report; 50% examination

Goals:

  • To increase the awareness of the importance of technological innovations, to teach which approaches are possible in certain conditions and how to achieve succesfull implementations.

  • To teach students to find their own way through significant trends and fashionable hypes.

Computer use:
Is not the purpose of this course; students may use computers for searching for information and for preparation of the report and the presentation. The significance of information and communication technology to improve the performance of the maufacturing industry is an essential element of the course.

Laboratory project(s):
The group assignments are more important than hands on experience on a limited topic in the laboratory.

Design content:
The course does not primarely aim at product design, although redesign of products may be an essential factor in the implementation of new manufacturing technology. New technology may lead to the complete redesign of a manufacturing system.

Percentage of design: can not be indicated.
