Development of Advanced CAD/CAM System

-   Determination of Machining Processes Based on Functions Assigned for Form Features

Brief Explanation

It is difficult to determine machining processes for a non-expert. A product shape is composed of many primitive form-features such as holes, slots, pockets, ribs, bosses, and so on. Each feature has a specific function such as positioning, screwing, guiding, and so on. Machining processes depend on the functions assigned for the features and machining processes should be determined according to the functions. The objective of this project is to develop an advanced CAD/CAM system which determines the machining processes due to the functions assigned for the form features composing a part.

Research Steps

1. Extraction of functions assigned for form features composing a mechanical part (one month)

2. Development of a sub-system to assign functions for form features on a CAD system (three months)

3. Development of a data-base to relate machining processes with the functions (two months)

4. Development of a sub-system to determine the machining processes according to the function assigned for the form features composing a mechanical part (three months)

5. Evaluation of the developed system. (one month)

Period

10 months, but can be shortened as a 5-month project by reducing development of one sub-system.

Necessary Background, Knowledge, Skills

Fundamental knowledge about machining processes

Computer programming skills. (C language, Open GL)
