Research Theme

Visual tracking of multiple persons

Brief Explanation

There is an increasing interest in visual surveillance for security and safety. This study will deal with the tracking of multiple persons in a relatively small area where heavy occlusions frequently occur. Especially, we will try to solve the data association problem (i.e., determining the correspondence between the observed data and the tracked persons) by a statistical approach. Several simplifying assumptions will be set on the tracking problem such as persons with distinctive colors and limited walking speed.

Research Steps

1. Literature survey and basic training in image processing (one month)

2. Implementing the statistical data association method (one to two months).

3. Testing the method with recorded image sequences and adding necessary improvements (two to three months).

4. On-line experiments (optional)

Period

5 months, but can be extended as a 10-month project, by including extensive experiments in ordinary settings (i.e., with fewer assumptions).

Necessary Background, Knowledge, Skills

Fundamental knowledge of probability and statistics. Basic computer programming skills (preferably, C or C++). Knowledge of image processing will be helpful but not necessarily required.
