wb1106 - statics
Components and resultants of forces in R2 and R3. Equilibrium in R2 and R3. Statically
determinate vs statically indeterminate structures. Plane trusses and frames. Centroids
and moments of inertia of plane areas. Normal force, shear force and bending moments in
beams.
wb1107 - Strength of materials
Statically determinate or indeterminate structures under external loads, temperature
changes and pre-stress; strain energy. Torsion of statically determinate structures;
transmission of power by shafts; strain energy. Bending, shearing and normal stresses in
beams; composite structures. Deflections of statically determinate or indeterminate
structures. The elastica or deflection curve; superposition using tables of beam
deflections ("vergeet-mij-nietjes").
wb1108 - Dynamics
Kinematics, rectilinear and curvilinear motions in R2 and R3; rectangular and
polar coordinates, relative motions, constraints.Dynamics of a particle and systems of
particles. Newton's Second Law, rectilinear and curvilinear motion, work, energy, momentum
and moment of momentum. Vibrations, damped and undamped systems with free or constrained
vibrations; energy balance.

Goals:
This course "Introduction to Engineering
Mechanics" addresses the fundamentals of the theory of statics, mechanics of
materials and dynamics. Basic notions and fundamental laws are discussed, and the
application to engineering problems is demonstrated. The objective of the course is to
provide a basic understanding of and to give a first training in the principles concerning
the strength, stiffness and dynamic behaviour of simple structures. |
