The Production Technology specialization concentrates on the entire manufacturing course of discrete products. This involves the manufacturing processes as well as the machines and tools. In addition to technical knowledge hereof, knowledge of the use of means of production in an industrial environment, i.e. technical management, is of great importance. Besides the subjects already mentioned, the data processing, economic, organizatorial and environmental aspects when designing manufacturing systems are considered as well.

A central point within this main subject is made up by the flexible computerization of manufacturing systems: groups of computerized manufacturing machines, assembled in cells, that are controlled by computers or computer networks. This computerization affects both cells for the manufacturing of components and cells for the assembly. As knowledge of the manufacturing of components and the assembly of those components into complete products is essential when designing products, much attention is paid to supporting the design process with respect to these aspects.

Production Technology is to a large extent multidisciplinary. Besides typically mechanical engineering aspects, such as machine tool construction and manufacturing technology, it is strongly concentrated on computer techniques. Therefore, a sound interest in computers is of great importance, but aspects concerning business economics and business organization are playing an important part as well.
