Detailed description of topics:

1 Project is created to evaluate existing devices and their elements. Main and sub-functions will be discerned, various standard elements are considered and alternatives for these elements are evaluated. Basic machine elements considered are

  • The design of joints using rivets and bolts with loading in shear or in tension, the design of slip-resistant and nonresistant joints, designs using preloading.
  • Welded connections.
  • Shafts, shaft-couplings, drives and gearboxes.
  • Roller bearings, hydrostatic and hydrodynamic slide bearings, seals

2 Projects are created to construct mechanical devices using general principles and design procedures. A design problem is translated in technical specification and materialized via brainstorming, sketches, evaluation and calculations. Further topics are

  • Principles of design based on mechanical strength and stiffness.
  • Terminology and standards.
  • Failure mode and effect analysis.

3 Projects are mainly evaluated by oral presentation of the results in combination with brief report.
