Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Marine Technology

Section of Engineering Mechanics

Lecturer(s):

Dr.Ir. Ron A.J. van Ostayen

Dr.Ir. Anton van Beek

Tel.:  015 - 27 86984 / 81647

Catalog data:

Since machine elements that fail prematurely or unexpectedly cause trouble, it is important to be able to identify and predict failure beforehand, if possible, so that preventive measures can be adopted. Failure analyis give good insight in how to avoid future failures by improving the situation and conditions.

Prerequisites (course codes):

wb5303 Tribology

Follow up (course codes):

wb2452-03 Machine reliability

Detailed description of topics:

Failure analysis give good insight in how a machine element can fail and what reason cause the failure. A system approach for failure analysis and a large number of cases are described in the course book.

In this course you will fulfill an experiment that will end in failure of a machine element. Secondly, you will apply failure analysis techniques to analyse the failure and report the analysis including a fundamental description of the failure.

Course material:

  • Beek, A. van, (2004), "Machine lifetime performance and reliability", 432 pp., first edition 2004, available at Leeghwater

References from literature:

Remarks assessment, entry requirements, etc.:

Learning goals:

You will learn to identify specific failure modes of machine elements by means of a system approach.

Computer use:

Data acquisition in laboratory experiment

Laboratory project(s):

Set-up of an experiment ending in failure.

Design content:

Failure analyis give good insight in how to avoid future failures by improving the situation and conditions in design stage.

Percentage of design:  80%
